Santiago Perez de Camino heads the “Church and Sport” Section at the Pontifical Council for the Laity since last April 2013. Santiago, born in Madrid in 1986 has been responsible for the Visa Office at the General Secretariat of World Youth Day Madrid 2011. He has collaborated for 10 years in youth ministry in the diocese of Madrid, including training coaches and soccer players in schools and youth clubs.

Almost a year ago Fr. Kevin Lixey, left the Pontifical Council for the Laity, to take a new post in the Regnum Christi Movement, in the United States. Since then, the section faces a new stage marked by the novelty of the election of Pope Francis, who has already expressed on many occasions his interest in the world of sports and soccer in particular.

The Church is committed to promoting the role of sport, both professional and amateur, recognizing in it a unique opportunity to strengthen the body and the spirit. The commitment and the goal of the "Church and Sport" section is to provide a reference point for ethics and christian values in the world of sport, helping to educate and strengthen the lifestyles of sportmen and sportwomen faced with the challenges of consumerism and egoism.
